Dance doesn’t have to be strenuous body conditioning, sore feet and aching muscles each week, to be considered as doing something beneficial health wise. Dance can be done just for the fun of it. Maybe you’re interested in Zumba Classes, or learning basic techniques to kill it on the dance floor at the next family party, or maybe you like to dance around the house because it’s your happy place. Either way, you’re moving your body and that’s what counts. Most importantly, dance can help how you emotionally and mentally feel too.
Have you ever had bad day, feeling like everything is going wrong and nothing could possibly make it feel any better? Then you hear your favourite song on the radio, in the house, in the shop, or in the car, and before you know it, you’re singing along, smiling and moving your body…. Even the smallest of moves is still dancing! A little secret of mine… I always play a story in my head in those moments, as though I’m the person who wrote the song, acting out my feelings in my movements and facial expressions! And then I catch myself and quickly stop (sometimes lol). It always tends to be when I’m out in public! I become very expressive.
That’s exactly what dance is…it’s an expressive art. It allows you to express your emotions freely and unapologetically. I like to refer to it as ‘therapy’. And just like when you’re exercising or in the gym, dance is a physical activity that releases the ‘feel good’ hormone called endorphins. This is a chemical that release in the brain which helps to reduce, or prevent anxiety and depression. Dance also reduces the level of the stress hormone, cortisol, in your body. And as it’s a physical activity, it can also help with weight loss and toning, improving physical health and confidence…It’s a WIN WIN!!
There are so many other benefits that could be mentioned, and I am sure from this read you have probably thought of some of your own. But just to add a few more for you, Dance can help you mind in these other ways:
- Improved Memory
- Improved Self-esteem and Confidence

With these types of benefits, imagine what weekly classes could do for you.
